Answer Details

The diagram shows a packaged product: a bottled drink (branded ZENA DRINK 2) enclosed inside a transparent outer box. The labelled parts identify the elements of a typical package.

a) Identification of the labelled parts

LabelPart identified
AThe outer package / carton (the box or container that holds the bottle) - the secondary or outer packaging.
BThe bottle / container - the primary package that actually holds the drink.
CThe label (bearing the brand name "ZENA DRINK 2").
DThe closure / seal (cap) or base of the bottle that keeps the content sealed and upright.

b) Three functions of part A (the outer package / carton) to the product

  1. Protection: it shields the bottle from breakage, dust, moisture, dirt and contamination during handling, storage and transportation.
  2. Ease of handling and transportation: it holds the product firmly and provides a convenient shape for lifting, stacking, storing and moving the product from the factory to the retailer.
  3. Promotion and information: its surface carries the brand name, colours and product details, so it advertises the product, attracts buyers on the shelf and also discourages tampering or pilferage.

c) Five importance of part C (the label) to the consumer

  1. Identification: the label carries the brand name (ZENA DRINK 2), so the consumer can easily recognise the product and distinguish it from competing brands.
  2. Product information: it states the ingredients, volume/quantity, flavour and nutritional content, helping the consumer to know exactly what is being bought.
  3. Manufacturing and expiry dates: it shows the date of production and best-before/expiry date, so the consumer can judge the freshness and safety of the drink before buying or consuming it.
  4. Instructions and directions for use: it gives guidance on how to store, serve or use the product (for example "serve chilled", "shake well", "keep away from sunlight").
  5. Safety, quality assurance and redress: it displays warnings, the NAFDAC/registration number, batch number and the manufacturer's name and address, assuring the consumer of quality and providing a contact for complaints or feedback.
