A reflex action is a rapid, automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus that does not require conscious thought or decision-making from the brain. Reflex actions are coordinated by the spinal cord (or brainstem) through a pathway called a reflex arc, which consists of a receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone (in the spinal cord), motor neurone, and effector.
Sneezing is a classic reflex action. When irritants such as dust, pollen, or strong odours stimulate nerve endings in the nasal mucosa, sensory signals travel to the sneeze centre in the brainstem, which triggers an involuntary, explosive expulsion of air through the nose and mouth. A person cannot consciously decide to sneeze or easily prevent a sneeze once it is triggered.
