Loamy soil is the most suitable soil for crop cultivation in Nigeria and in agriculture generally. Loam is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay in roughly balanced proportions, which gives it a combination of properties ideal for plant growth:

• Good water retention and drainage: It holds enough moisture for roots to absorb but drains excess water, preventing waterlogging.
• Good aeration: The presence of sand particles creates air spaces, allowing root respiration and the activity of beneficial soil organisms.
• High nutrient content: The clay and silt fractions hold mineral ions through cation exchange, while organic matter (humus) further enriches the soil.
• Easy to work: Loam is neither too heavy nor too light, making it easy to plough and cultivate.

Laterite soil is highly weathered and leached, with poor fertility and a hard, iron-rich crust that limits root penetration. Sandy soil drains too quickly and has very low nutrient-holding capacity. Clayey soil holds too much water, has poor drainage and aeration, and becomes very hard when dry, making it difficult for roots to penetrate.
