A reflex action is a rapid, involuntary, and automatic response to a stimulus that does not require conscious thought or decision-making from the brain. Reflex actions are mediated by a reflex arc: a stimulus is detected by a receptor, a sensory neuron carries the impulse to the spinal cord (or brainstem), a relay neuron processes it, and a motor neuron sends a response to the effector (muscle or gland), all without the cerebral cortex making a deliberate decision.
Coughing is a reflex action. When an irritant enters the airways, receptors in the throat and bronchi are stimulated, and a rapid, involuntary cough is triggered to expel the irritant. This happens automatically and does not require a conscious decision, although it can sometimes be voluntarily suppressed or initiated.
Writing, talking, and walking are all voluntary actions that require conscious thought and coordination by the cerebral cortex of the brain. Although walking can become somewhat automatic with practice, it is initiated and controlled voluntarily and involves complex motor planning, making it a learned voluntary action rather than a true reflex.
Exam tip: True reflex actions are involuntary and immediate. Common examples include coughing, sneezing, blinking, knee-jerk response, and withdrawal of the hand from a hot object.
