After the death of King Solomon, the people of Israel approached his son Rehoboam and requested that he lighten their burden of taxes and labor. However, he refused and threatened to make their yoke even heavier. As a result, the northern tribes of Israel rebelled and appointed Jeroboam as their king, leading to the division of the kingdom into two parts: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.
