David's attitude to Abner's death can be described as sincere shock. Abner was the commander of Saul's army and was considered an enemy of David. However, Abner had recently defected to David's side and was working towards a reconciliation between the two kingdoms. When Joab, one of David's commanders, killed Abner, David was genuinely shocked and saddened. He lamented Abner's death and cursed Joab and his family.
