King Santigi V, the ruler of Mando in Dele Charley's The Blood of a Stranger, is largely presented as an unwise ruler whose failures of judgement open the door to bloodshed and the near-ruin of his kingdom. A good king protects his people, guards their customs and weighs counsel critically; Santigi does the opposite.

• He is gullible and easily deceived. Santigi surrenders his royal judgement to Maligu, the soothsayer. When Maligu fabricates an oracle demanding the blood of a stranger, the King accepts it without probing, allowing a private greed to be dressed up as the will of the gods. A wise ruler tests the counsel of his priests; Santigi merely obeys.
• He sanctions human sacrifice. By ordering that a stranger be killed to secure prosperity, the King places superstition above the sanctity of human life, endangering the innocent and staining the throne with blood.
• He is blind to the danger of the white stranger. Santigi does not perceive that Whitehead's interest in Mando's land is exploitative. His failure to protect the community's soil and wealth shows a ruler who cannot read the political currents around him.
• He ignores wiser voices. His own son Kindo, a brave and clear-sighted warrior, sees through the intrigue, yet the King does not lean on him. Santigi trusts the schemers and distrusts the honest.
• He is driven by the desire for prosperity rather than justice, making him a tool in the hands of Maligu and Soko.

In fairness, one may argue that Santigi acts within a culture that reveres the oracle, so his obedience reflects genuine faith rather than mere folly. Yet true kingship demands discernment, and his refusal to question obvious manipulation is itself the failure. The catastrophe that engulfs Mando, ending in his own death, is the direct fruit of his misrule. On balance, Santigi V stands condemned as an unwise ruler whose weakness of judgement destroys the very people he was meant to guard.
