Answer Details
The sawing method changes the direction of the growth rings in each board. That affects both movement during drying and the visible grain pattern.
- Through-and-through sawing cuts straight across the log. It is quick and produces little waste, but boards cut nearer the outside have growth rings running across their width. They are more likely to cup as they dry. [2]
- Quarter sawing cuts boards radially, so the growth rings run through the thickness. This makes boards more stable and gives a straighter figure, but it is slower and wastes more timber. [2]
