Fig. 1 shows a component that must be produced in a quantity of 200 with an accurate bore. Explain how the manufacturer would plan the sequence of operations to make this component. [6]

Answer Details

A logical sequence establishes an accurate reference surface first, completes less critical shaping, then finishes the critical bore. For 200 parts, the set-up and checking method must also be repeatable.

  1. Cut blanks from stock to length, leaving machining allowance [1].
  2. Face and centre one end to establish a datum, a reference from which later dimensions are measured [1].
  3. Turn the outside diameters from this datum so the cylindrical features remain concentric [1].
  4. Drill the hole, then ream or bore it accurately to final size. Drilling alone does not give the required tolerance or surface finish [1].
  5. Machine the critical bore late in the sequence, so any distortion or error caused by earlier work can be removed [1].
  6. Use a fixture and a limit gauge, ensuring every component is located, machined and checked in the same way [1].

This sequence prioritises datum control, concentricity and final bore accuracy. [6]
