Steel is produced by adding carbon to iron during the manufacturing process. Explain how the addition of carbon changes the working properties of the material. [3]

Answer Details

When carbon is added to iron, carbon atoms occupy spaces in the iron lattice and obstruct the movement of dislocations. [1] Dislocations are defects whose movement allows layers of atoms to slip and the metal to deform.

Because slip is made more difficult, the steel becomes harder and has greater tensile strength. [1] However, as carbon content rises, ductility and toughness decrease: high-carbon steel is hard but more brittle. [1]
