Explain why a composite material can be designed to be stronger in one direction than another. [2]

Answer Details

A composite consists of a reinforcing material, often fibres, held in a matrix. The fibres carry most of the load and are much stronger along their length than across it [1]. Designers can align the fibres in the direction of the main force, giving high strength in that direction; across the fibres, the material relies more on the weaker matrix and is therefore less strong [1].
