Fig. 1 shows a drawing of a component with several toleranced dimensions. Explain four consequences for the manufacturer if a component is made outside its stated tolerance. [4]
Four consequences, one mark each.
The part may not assemble with its mating component, so the product cannot be built at all. If it does go together it may not function correctly, or may wear rapidly because clearances are wrong. The part has to be scrapped or reworked, which wastes the material and the machine time already spent on it. Production may be stopped while the cause is found and the machine reset, so the loss is not limited to the parts already made. And if the fault reaches the customer it brings warranty claims, returns and damage to reputation.
Note that the tolerance is what the designer decided the part can vary by and still work, so being outside it is a functional failure, not a cosmetic one.
