Question 1 Report

A company advertises a product as environmentally friendly, but an investigation finds the claim is based only on the packaging. Explain what is meant by greenwashing and why it is a problem for customers and for industry. [4]

Answer Details

Greenwashing is presenting a product as more environmentally responsible than it really is. It commonly involves highlighting a minor improvement, such as packaging, while ignoring the product’s more significant environmental impacts [2].

This is a problem for customers because they may pay more or choose that product believing that they are reducing environmental harm when they are not [1]. It is also a problem for industry because misleading claims reduce trust in genuine environmental claims. Manufacturers that make meaningful, often more costly, improvements then gain less advantage for doing so [1].
