Explain how the choice of stock form affects the manufacturing processes needed to produce a component. [4]
Answer Details
Stock form means the form in which a material is bought, such as sheet, solid bar, tube, extrusion or moulding. Choosing a form close to the required finished shape reduces the amount of processing needed.
- If the stock form is already close to the finished shape, little material must be removed. This means fewer operations and less machine time. [1]
- Starting with solid bar can allow a wide range of final shapes, but much of the bar may be cut away as swarf. This is slow and wasteful. [1]
- Sheet material is generally cut and folded, rather than turned as a bar would be. It therefore requires different equipment and processes. [1]
- An extruded or moulded section may need only cutting to length and drilling. Whole machining stages can therefore be removed. [1]
