  1. (a) A suitable durable finish is powder coating [1]. Painting or galvanising would also be acceptable for mild steel because each can protect the surface from corrosion.
  2. (b) Surface preparation is essential because:
    • Grease and oil stop the finish adhering properly. The coating may then peel or blister during use [1].
    • Loose rust or mill scale can detach later, taking the coating with it and exposing bare steel to corrosion [1].

Give a cause and an effect: contamination does not merely make the surface untidy; it causes poor adhesion and loss of protection.
