Fig. 1 shows a wind rose from a microclimate study around a hospital in Manchester. The arrow length represents the number of observations of wind coming from each direction during one month. Students also recorded temperature and cloud cover at midday. They want to decide which entrance is most sheltered for people waiting outside.

- (b) A choropleth gives one category or average value for an entire ward. It can therefore hide differences between streets and individual households within that ward. Large wards may also appear more important visually than smaller wards. [2]

- (a) The prevailing wind direction is north because the north-pointing arrow is longest, showing the greatest number of observations from that direction. [1]
- (b) A north wind blows from the north towards the south. Therefore, the south side of a building is the leeward and more sheltered side because the building blocks wind coming from the north. [2]
