Question 1 Report

A group of students used Fig. 1 to plan a transect across a sand dune system on the coast of Wales. The line begins at the beach, crosses a mobile dune and ends in a sheltered hollow. Their teacher asks them to record vegetation at equal intervals along the same line so that the data can be compared fairly.

(a) State the sampling method shown by the dashed line in Fig. 1. [1]
(b) State one item of equipment, other than a tape measure, that students could use to measure vegetation cover. [1]

Answer Details
  1. (a) The dashed line represents systematic sampling along a transect, also called a line transect or belt transect when data are recorded at intervals along it. Sampling vegetation at equal intervals provides a consistent way to compare change from beach to dune hollow. [1]
  2. (b) A quadrat can be used to estimate vegetation cover. A point frame is also acceptable. [1]
