Read the information below from a students' fieldwork enquiry in a shopping district. Fifteen pedestrians were selected by asking every tenth person passing a fixed point between 12:00 and 12:30. Each person was asked how they travelled to the centre. The students recorded no names and thanked people who chose not to answer. They intend to show their data as a pie chart after checking totals.
(a) State the sampling method used. [1]

Fig. 1 shows a simple bar chart from a beach-clean survey at three bays in Cornwall. Students collected litter from equal 50 metre sections of beach, using gloves and bags. The chart records only plastic bottles. Their method is intended to make comparisons between sites, although tides and visitor numbers may affect the data collected.
