Fig. 1 is a field sketch of an eroding cliff at a coastal study site near Whitby. The students drew it from a safe viewing point above the beach. They are investigating whether wave action and weathering are creating hazards for a footpath near the cliff edge. The sketch contains visible features, but measurements and photographs are needed to support the written observations.

Sketch map
- (a) The public tap is north-east, or NE, of the southern shop. It is both above it on the map, indicating north, and to its right, indicating east. [1]
- (b) A key would improve the sketch map by explaining its symbols. A title, scale, street names or a clearer fieldwork location would also be acceptable additions. [1]
- (c) A sketch map provides spatial context: it shows the location and pattern of observations, which numerical data alone may not show clearly. [1]
Coastal field sketch
- (a) The feature at the base of the cliff is a wave-cut notch. Wave erosion undercuts the cliff near its base. [1]
- (b) Students should not stand directly below the cliff because of the risk of rockfall or cliff collapse, which could cause injury from falling material. [1]
