The diagram in Fig. 1 shows a restored floodplain wetland beside a river in the Netherlands. A former straight flood bank has been set back, allowing water to enter shallow pools and reed beds during high flow. The site is used by frogs, dragonflies and wetland birds. Farmers nearby are concerned about flooding, while conservation groups support the scheme.
