Question 1 Report

A bakery separates production into tasks. One group measures ingredients, another operates ovens, and a third packs bread. The owner expects this division of labour to lower costs.

(a) State what is meant by division of labour. [1]
(b) Explain one way division of labour may increase the bakery's output. [2]

Answer Details
  1. (a) Division of labour means splitting production into specialised tasks. [1]
  2. (b) Repeating one task allows workers to become more skilled or faster at that task. [1] Therefore, more bread can be produced in a given time, so labour productivity rises. [1]

For example, a worker who only packs bread does not repeatedly switch between measuring, baking and packing, which saves time.
