Fig. 1 shows a convex security mirror fixed above a narrow aisle in a museum shop. A guard at point G uses the mirror to observe visitors near two display cases. The mirror is curved outwards towards the aisle. It is not used to make a detailed image, but it allows the guard to observe a larger region from one position.

(b) Explain why this mirror gives the guard a wide field of view. [2]

Answer Details

(a) Parallel rays reflected by a convex mirror diverge, or spread out. [1]

(b) Rays from a large area are reflected towards the guard. [1] Thus objects across a wider angle can be seen, giving a wide field of view. [1]

(c) The image is diminished, or smaller than the object. [1]
