Question 1 Report
The diagram shows a student investigating a nichrome wire for a heated glove project. The student connects the wire to a 6.0 V supply and records a current of 0.30 A. The wire has resistance, so it warms when current passes through it. A copper connecting cable is also shown. It stays much cooler because its resistance is lower. The student runs the circuit for 200 s and wants to compare the power in the heating wire with the energy transferred during the test.
(a) Give the power of the nichrome wire. [2]
(b) Complete the calculation of energy transferred in 200 s. [2]
(c) Describe why the nichrome wire becomes hotter than the copper cable. [2]
(a) \[P=VI=6.0\text{ V}\times0.30\text{ A}=1.8\text{ W}\] [2]
(b) \[E=Pt=1.8\text{ W}\times200\text{ s}=360\text{ J}\] [2]
(c) Nichrome has a higher resistance than the copper cable. Therefore more electrical energy is transferred to thermal energy in the nichrome, making it hotter. [2]
