Question 1 Report

50 45.5 42.0 coin initial level final level 28.0 g balance

A student tests a new alloy coin. Fig. 1 shows the coin placed in a measuring cylinder containing water. The water level rises from 42.0 cm3 to 45.5 cm3. The mass of the coin is 28.0 g.

(a) Complete the calculation of the volume of the coin.
volume = ............ cm3 [1]
(b) Use the equation density = mass ÷ volume to calculate the density of the coin. Give your answer to one decimal place. [2]
(c) Suggest why a coin should be made from a hard alloy. [1]
(d) Give one reason why the coin is not made from pure gold. [1]

A recycling centre separates aluminium drinks cans from steel food cans. Fig. 1 shows cans moving on a conveyor belt beneath an electromagnet. The electromagnet is switched on for part of the belt. Table 1 gives the mass of metal collected in one hour.

metalmass collected / kg
steel146
aluminium82

(a) Name the metal that is attracted to the electromagnet. [1]
(b) Use Table 1 to calculate the total mass of cans collected. [1]
(c) Give one environmental benefit of recycling aluminium. [1]
(d) Suggest why an electromagnet is more useful than a permanent magnet in this machine. [1]

Answer Details

Alloy coin

  1. (a) The coin volume is the rise in water level:
    \[45.5\text{ cm}^3-42.0\text{ cm}^3=\mathbf{3.5\text{ cm}^3}\] [1]
  2. (b) \[\text{density}=\frac{\text{mass}}{\text{volume}}=\frac{28.0\text{ g}}{3.5\text{ cm}^3}=\mathbf{8.0\text{ g/cm}^3}\]
This is already to one decimal place. [2]
  3. (c) A coin should be hard so it resists scratching and wear during use. [1]
  4. (d) Pure gold is not used because it is expensive or too soft. [1]

Recycling cans

  1. (a) Steel, or iron, is attracted to the electromagnet. [1]
  2. (b) \[146\text{ kg}+82\text{ kg}=\mathbf{228\text{ kg}}\] [1]
  3. (c) Recycling aluminium saves energy, conserves aluminium ore, reduces landfill, or reduces mining. [1]
  4. (d) An electromagnet can be switched on and off, so the steel cans can be released at the required point. [1]
