This reaction is used by a water-treatment company to remove ammonia from waste gas. Fig. 1 shows an energy profile for a reaction in which ammonia is oxidised. The products are lower in energy than the reactants.

  1. The products are lower in energy than the reactants, so this is an exothermic reaction. [1]
  2. The energy needed to start a reaction is the activation energy. [1]
  3. Energy is first taken in to reach the peak, which corresponds to breaking bonds in reactants. When new product bonds form, more energy is released than was taken in. The products therefore finish at lower energy than the reactants. [3]
