Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows a simplified antibody test kit used during an outbreak. A drop of blood is placed in the sample well. After 10 minutes, a coloured line at C means the test worked. A line at T means antibodies to the pathogen were detected. One person's result has lines at both C and T.
(a) What does the C line show? [1]
(b) Suggest what a line at T may indicate about the person's immune system. [2]
(c) Describe why a result with no C line should not be used. [2]
(d) Which blood cells produce antibodies? [1]
(a) The line at C is the control line. It shows that the test has worked and that the result is valid. [1]
(b) A line at T indicates that the person has antibodies to the pathogen. They may have had the infection previously or may have been vaccinated against it. [2]
(c) If there is no C line, the test may not have worked correctly. Therefore any line, or absence of a line, at T cannot be trusted or interpreted. [2]
(d) Lymphocytes produce antibodies. [1]
