Question 1 Report

(a) List two types of waves, apart from light, that can be plane polarised

(b) State two applications of plane polarised light.

Answer Details

(a) Two types of waves, apart from light, that can be plane polarised. Only transverse waves can be polarised. Examples:

  1. Radio waves (electromagnetic).
  2. Microwaves (electromagnetic). (Other acceptable answers: X-rays, or transverse mechanical waves on a stretched string.)

(b) Two applications of plane polarised light:

  1. Polaroid sunglasses and camera filters, used to cut out glare from reflected light.
  2. Measuring the concentration of optically active solutions such as sugar (polarimetry / saccharimetry); also used in stress analysis of materials (photoelasticity) and in LCD screens.
