The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962. It was a 13-day confrontation (16-28 October) between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, and it is widely regarded as the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.

The crisis began when American U-2 reconnaissance aircraft discovered Soviet medium-range and intermediate-range ballistic missile sites under construction in Cuba. President John F. Kennedy responded by imposing a naval blockade (officially termed a "quarantine") around Cuba and demanding the removal of the missiles. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev initially refused, leading to a tense standoff.

The crisis was resolved through diplomatic negotiation: the Soviet Union agreed to dismantle and remove the missiles from Cuba in exchange for a US pledge not to invade Cuba, along with a secret agreement to remove American Jupiter missiles from Turkey. The crisis demonstrated the dangers of nuclear brinkmanship and led to the establishment of a direct communication link (the "hotline") between Washington and Moscow in 1963, as well as renewed efforts toward arms control, including the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963.
