The term derives from the Latin numisma (coin), itself from the Greek nomisma. Numismatists examine the physical characteristics of coins (metal composition, weight, inscriptions, imagery) as well as their historical and economic context.

As a source of historical evidence, coins are invaluable. They can reveal information about a civilization's economy, trade networks, political leadership (through portraits and titles stamped on coins), religious beliefs (through symbols and inscriptions), and technological capability (through minting techniques). Coins are durable and widely distributed, so they often survive when written records do not.
