What is the name of the organ directly responsible for the respiration of the young of farm animals before birth?

Before birth, the young of farm animals (the foetus) cannot breathe using its lungs because the lungs are collapsed and filled with fluid. Instead, the organ directly responsible for foetal respiration is the placenta.

The placenta is a specialised organ that develops during pregnancy and attaches to the wall of the uterus (womb). It connects the foetus to the mother's blood supply through the umbilical cord. Oxygen from the mother's blood diffuses across the placental membrane into the foetal blood, while carbon dioxide produced by the foetus diffuses in the opposite direction into the mother's blood for removal. This gas exchange is the equivalent of breathing for the unborn animal.

The womb (uterus) houses the developing foetus but does not perform gas exchange itself. The fallopian tube (oviduct) is where fertilisation occurs and has no role in foetal respiration. The lungs only become functional at birth, when the newborn takes its first breath and the lungs inflate with air.
