A soil profile is a vertical cross-section of the soil from the surface down to the parent rock or bedrock. It reveals how soil particles are organised into distinct horizontal layers called horizons (typically labelled A, B, C, and sometimes O and R). Each horizon has different physical and chemical properties resulting from processes such as weathering, leaching, and organic matter accumulation.

The physical composition of soil layers and the chemical composition of soil layers are properties you might observe when studying a soil profile, but they do not define what a soil profile is. The colours exhibited by different layers are a useful visual indicator for identifying horizons (for example, dark topsoil versus lighter subsoil), but colour alone does not constitute the soil profile. The profile is the complete vertical arrangement of the layers themselves.
