Crop rotation is the practice of growing different crops in a planned sequence on the same piece of land over successive seasons or years. Its importance in sustainable agriculture centres on two key benefits: pest and disease management and soil fertility improvement.
Pest and disease management: Many pests and pathogens are host-specific - they attack particular crop families. When the same crop is grown repeatedly on the same land, these organisms build up in the soil and multiply. Rotating to a different, unrelated crop breaks the pest's life cycle because the new crop is not a suitable host, causing the pest population to decline.
Soil fertility improvement: Different crops draw on different nutrients at different rates. By alternating between heavy feeders (e.g., maize) and nitrogen-fixing legumes (e.g., cowpea, groundnut), the soil's nutrient balance is maintained or improved. Legumes, through their symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria, convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms that enrich the soil for the next crop.
The other three options describe problems that crop rotation actually helps to prevent, not benefits it produces. Crop rotation reduces erosion (through diverse root systems), decreases dependence on chemical fertilizers, and generally increases - not reduces - overall yield stability.
