Layering is a method of vegetative (asexual) propagation in which a stem or branch is encouraged to develop roots while still attached to the parent plant. Once roots have formed, the new plant is separated and transplanted.
Because layering is asexual, it does not involve pollen transfer, pollination, or the fusion of male and female gametes. The entire reproductive process that depends on fertilization is bypassed. This means the possible failure of fertilization - which can occur in sexual reproduction due to poor pollination, incompatible pollen, unfavourable weather, or absence of pollinators - is completely avoided.
The other options describe features that do not apply to layering. Variability arising in propagated plants is actually a characteristic of sexual reproduction, not vegetative methods like layering, which produce genetically identical clones. Similarly, offspring performing better than their parents (hybrid vigour) results from cross-breeding, not cloning. The abundance of pollination agents is irrelevant to layering because no pollination takes place at all.
Exam tip: Whenever a question refers to advantages of vegetative propagation methods (layering, budding, grafting, cutting), remember that they all bypass the uncertainties of sexual reproduction, including pollination failure and genetic variation.
