Tillage refers to the mechanical manipulation of soil to prepare it for crop production. Different tillage systems disturb the soil to varying degrees.

Minimum tillage is a conservation tillage practice in which only the specific spots or strips where seeds will be planted are tilled, leaving the rest of the field undisturbed. When this is done as discrete spots rather than continuous strips, it is called spot tillage. The goal is to reduce the total area of soil that is disturbed, which helps conserve soil moisture, reduce erosion, lower labour and fuel costs, and preserve soil structure.

Maximum tillage involves ploughing and working the entire field thoroughly, which is the opposite of the selective approach described. Operational tillage is not a standard agricultural classification. Erodibility tillage is not a recognised term in soil science or agronomy.

The defining feature of minimum tillage is that soil disturbance is kept to the smallest area necessary for planting, and spot tillage is a specific form of this approach.
