What is the role of a good seedbed in crop production?

A good seedbed provides a suitable environment for seed germination and early seedling growth. Seedbed preparation involves tilling, levelling, and refining the soil so that it has the right tilth (fine, crumbly texture), adequate moisture, proper aeration, and good soil-to-seed contact. These conditions allow seeds to absorb water (imbibition), germinate, and establish strong root systems during the critical early growth stage.
