ما نوع الكلمة "في"؟

Arabic words are divided into three categories: اسم (noun), فعل (verb), and حرف (particle). Particles are words that have no meaning on their own and only acquire meaning when used with other words in a sentence. Among the most important particles are حروف الجر (prepositions), which connect nouns to verbs or other nouns and cause the noun that follows them to take the genitive case (مجرور).

The word في (in/at) is one of the standard Arabic prepositions. It indicates location or time, e.g., في البيت (in the house), في الصباح (in the morning). It is not a ظرف زمان (adverb of time) because adverbs of time are nouns like صباحًا or مساءً that function as time indicators. It is not an اسم (noun) because it cannot stand alone with meaning, and it is certainly not a فعل (verb) because it does not indicate an action or event.

Exam tip: Memorise the common حروف الجر: من، إلى، عن، على، في، بـ، لـ، كـ. Any word from this list is always classified as حرف جر.
