Akuko ifo (folktales) are traditional Igbo stories passed down orally from generation to generation, typically told in the evening by elders to younger members of the community. These stories feature animals, spirits, and humans in situations that carry important moral lessons.

The primary importance of folktales in Igbo culture is izulite agwa (building character/moral development). Through the adventures and consequences experienced by characters in folktales, children learn the values of honesty, hard work, humility, obedience, and respect. The moral at the end of each folktale directly shapes the listener's character and behaviour.

Folktales are not primarily for academic reading (igu akwukwo), cooking preparation (ikwado nri), or making money (imeputa ego). Their fundamental purpose is moral instruction and the transmission of cultural values that build good character in the young.
