This dance is traditionally performed during alumdi na nwunye (marriage ceremonies). In Igbo marriage celebrations, the maidens' dance is a prominent feature where young women of the community showcase their grace and beauty through coordinated dance movements. The dance serves both as entertainment for wedding guests and as a cultural display during the marriage festivities.

The dance is not associated with divination (igba afa), which is a spiritual practice involving a diviner. It is not a general entertainment form without context (egwu egwu), nor is it a school-based activity (igba egwu n'ulo akwukwo). Its traditional setting is specifically the marriage ceremony.
