In Igbo oral literature, ilu (proverbs) are short, wise sayings that encode cultural wisdom, moral lessons, and practical truths. They are a defining feature of Igbo speech and storytelling.

Proverbs are most commonly employed within akuko ifo (folktales). Folktales are the primary vehicle through which Igbo elders and storytellers pass on wisdom to younger generations. Within these narratives, proverbs appear naturally - characters use them to advise, warn, or emphasise a moral point. The storyteller also weaves proverbs into the narrative to reinforce the lesson of the tale.

While proverbs can appear in songs (abu), textbooks (akwukwo ogugu), and general stories (akuko akuko), folktales are their traditional and most frequent home in Igbo oral tradition. The connection between ilu and akuko ifo is foundational in Igbo literary studies.
