Question 1 Report

A market stallholder sells free-range eggs in two box sizes: a box of \(6\) eggs for \(\pounds2.16\), and a box of \(15\) eggs for \(\pounds5.10\). Work out the price per egg for each box size, and state which box gives better value for money. (3)

Answer Details

To compare value for money, find the cost per single egg in each box. For the box of \(6\): \(2.16\div6=\pounds0.36\) per egg. [1 mark]

For the box of \(15\): \(5.10\div15=\pounds0.34\) per egg. [1 mark]

Since \(\pounds0.34\) is less than \(\pounds0.36\), each egg costs less in the larger box, so the box of \(15\) eggs gives better value for money. [1 mark]

Comparing unit prices, rather than the total prices of the two boxes, is the only fair way to judge value when the boxes contain different numbers of eggs.
