Question 1 Report

Water leaks from a storage tank at a constant rate of 3.5 litres per minute. The tank starts with 210 litres of water.

  1. Work out how much water has leaked out after 24 minutes. (2)
  2. Find how many litres of water remain in the tank at this time. (1)

Answer Details

This question uses a constant leak rate to find the volume lost over time, then subtracts it from the starting volume.

(a) The volume leaked is the rate multiplied by the time: \(3.5 \times 24\). [1 mark]

This equals \(84\) litres. [1 mark]

(b) The remaining water is the starting volume minus the amount leaked: \(210 - 84 = 126\) litres. [1 mark]

Rate multiplied by time gives the total change, which is then subtracted from (or added to) the starting amount depending on whether the tank is emptying or filling.
