Question 1 Report
A corner shop keeps a box of 8 winning and 32 losing scratch cards, all identical in appearance. Deja buys one card at random from the box.
This question tests finding a simple probability as a decimal from a total number of equally likely outcomes.
The box contains \( 8 + 32 = 40 \) scratch cards in total, 8 of which are winning cards. Since Deja's card is chosen at random, every card is equally likely to be picked, so
\[ P(\text{winning}) = \frac{8}{40} = 0.2 \] [2 marks]
Writing the probability as a decimal here is simply \( 8 \div 40 \); the fraction \( \frac{8}{40} \) and the decimal \( 0.2 \) represent exactly the same probability, just in different forms.
