Work out the fraction of the chores, in its simplest form, that still need to be completed. (3)

This question uses a diagram to test reading data before simplifying a fraction. The chart is divided into 12 equal boxes, one for each chore, and the shaded boxes represent chores already completed. Counting the diagram, 8 of the 12 boxes are shaded, so \(12 - 8 = 4\) boxes remain unshaded [1 mark].
The fraction of chores still to be completed is therefore the unshaded boxes over the total, \(\frac{4}{12}\) [1 mark]. Simplifying by dividing the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor, 4, gives \(\frac{4}{12} = \frac{1}{3}\) [1 mark]. So one third of the chores still need to be completed this week.
