Question 1 Report
The diagram shows a 5 by 4 grid of squares. Some of the squares are shaded.
The grid contains 20 equal squares in total (5 across, 4 down); counting the shaded (grey) squares in the diagram gives 12 shaded and 8 unshaded.
(a) The fraction of the grid shaded is:
\[\frac{12}{20}\] [1 mark]
Dividing numerator and denominator by their highest common factor, 4:
\[= \frac{3}{5}\] [1 mark]
(b) The number of squares not shaded is \(20 - 12 = 8\). As a percentage of the whole grid:
\[\frac{8}{20} \times 100\] [1 mark]
\[= 40\%\] [1 mark]
Counting the shaded and unshaded squares directly from the grid, rather than estimating, is essential here, since the fraction and percentage both depend on an exact count out of the 20 equal squares.
