Staff and volunteers arrive early to set up the running track, field events and refreshment stalls before school sports day begins, checking every piece of equipment carefully beforehand. Preparation starts 2.5 hours before the first race of the morning is due to start.
Work out how many minutes before the first race the preparation begins. (2)

Converting hours to minutes uses the fact that there are 60 minutes in every hour, so any time in hours is multiplied by 60 to express it in minutes.
\(2.5 \times 60\) [1 mark]
\(= 150\) minutes [1 mark]
Breaking \(2.5\) hours into \(2\) whole hours (\(120\) minutes) plus \(0.5\) hours (\(30\) minutes) gives \(120 + 30 = 150\) minutes, the same result, and is a useful mental check when a calculator is not available.
