Question 1 Report

Read the information below about a freelance translator. She receives documents from clients using an online portal and works from a laptop in a shared apartment. A client has sent a message asking her to click a link immediately to confirm her password. The link opens a website whose address is similar to, but not exactly the same as, the portal address. The translator has not installed recent software updates because she is worried they will interrupt her work.

(a) State the name of the cybercrime suggested by the message. [1]
(b) Describe two checks the translator should make before entering account information on a website. [4]
(c) Explain why installing operating system and security software updates is important for a home worker. [4]
(d) Give two actions the translator should take if she has already entered her password on the suspicious site. [4]

Answer Details

(a) The message suggests phishing. [1]

(b) Check the full URL/domain is the genuine organisation's address, because a similar address may be fraudulent. [2] Check for HTTPS/padlock to confirm an encrypted connection, but recognise this alone does not prove the site is genuine. [2] Other valid checks are opening the saved official portal address instead of the link, or contacting the organisation through a known contact method. Any two developed checks. [4]

(c) Updates fix security vulnerabilities [1] that attackers could exploit if left unpatched. [1] They can improve malware protection, correct faults, maintain compatibility with current online services, and reduce unauthorised access to client data. Any four. [4]

(d) Change the password immediately through the genuine portal so the exposed password cannot continue to be used. [2] Change it on any other account where it was reused, because attackers may try it elsewhere. [2] Other valid actions are enabling two-factor authentication, reporting the incident, and running an antivirus scan. Any two developed actions. [4]
