Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows equipment used by a mobile dental clinic. A dentist carries a laptop, a compact X-ray sensor and a portable printer between villages. Patient records are held on the laptop, while the X-ray sensor sends image data directly to it. The dentist considers taking a desktop computer instead because it has a larger screen and more disk storage. However, the clinic works from a van and must set up quickly. The records contain confidential information and the laptop is sometimes connected to the internet through a smartphone hotspot.
(a) Give two advantages of taking a laptop rather than a desktop computer to the clinic. [2]
(b) Describe three uses of the laptop during a patient appointment. [3]
(c) Explain two ways the dentist can reduce the risk of unauthorised access to patient information on the laptop. [4]
(a) A laptop is portable/lighter and has an internal battery. It also takes less space and can be set up more quickly than a desktop. [2]
(b) During an appointment, the laptop can access patient records, enter treatment information and view X-ray images. Printing a prescription or appointment document and securely sending data to a central system are also valid. [3]
(c) A strong password or biometric login prevents an unauthorised person signing in. Encrypting the disk means files cannot readily be read if the laptop is stolen. Automatic screen locking and two-factor authentication for online records are further valid protections. Any two explained methods gain credit. [4]
