Question 1 Report

Fig. 1 shows the recruitment and selection route used by Lego for a new store supervisor. The store manager receives many applications because the role involves supervising employees, dealing with parents and children, and maintaining stock displays. Candidates who meet the essential requirements on the application form move to a group building activity. Candidates then complete a structured interview before the final job offer. Lego wants its recruitment process to identify someone who can lead staff while also enjoying customer contact. The manager will give the successful applicant training on the store's stock system after appointment.

(a) State the selection method used immediately before the structured interview in Fig. 1. [2]
(b) Define internal recruitment. [3]
(c) Explain one reason why Lego may use a structured interview rather than an unplanned interview. [5]
(d) Analyse whether Lego should recruit the store supervisor internally or externally. [10]

Answer Details

(a) The selection method immediately before the structured interview is a group building activity, or group exercise. [2]

(b) Internal recruitment means filling a vacancy with an existing employee from within the business. [3]

(c) In a structured interview, every candidate is asked the same relevant questions. This allows the manager to compare answers fairly, reduces personal bias and ensures that key leadership and customer-contact skills are assessed against the person specification. [5]

(d) Internal recruitment can motivate employees because promotion is possible. An internal candidate already knows LEGO procedures and culture, reducing induction, training time and recruitment costs. However, internal recruitment gives a smaller pool of candidates, may create another vacancy and can disappoint unsuccessful employees.

External recruitment produces a wider range of applicants, including supervisors from other retailers who may bring useful experience and new ideas. However, it can be slower and more expensive, and the appointee needs time to learn LEGO systems.

Internal recruitment is preferable if a capable existing employee has the necessary leadership and customer-service skills. External recruitment is more suitable if these skills are not available among current staff. [10]
