(a) Outline map of Africa showing lumbering countries, saw-milling towns and timber ports

Country (lumbering)Saw-milling townExport seaport
NigeriaSapeleSapele/Warri (or Calabar)
GhanaKumasiTakoradi
Cote d'IvoireGagnoa (interior)Abidjan (or San Pedro)

(DR Congo/Gabon with Libreville are also acceptable.)

(b) Three ways lumbering is important to West African countries

  1. Foreign exchange: export of logs, sawn timber, plywood and veneer earns valuable foreign currency.
  2. Employment and income: felling, haulage, saw-milling and furniture-making provide many jobs.
  3. Raw materials and local needs: timber supplies building materials, furniture, poles, plywood and fuel, and supports paper and construction industries.

(c) Three problems resulting from the exploitation of timber

  1. Deforestation and loss of forest cover, which destroys wildlife habitats and reduces biodiversity.
  2. Soil erosion, leaching and loss of soil fertility once the protective forest is removed, and disturbance of the water cycle.
  3. Over-exploitation and slow regeneration of valuable species, so the resource is being used up faster than it is replaced, threatening future supply.
