(a) Animal improvement
Animal improvement is the application of scientific principles and breeding techniques to develop farm animals that possess desirable/superior characteristics such as higher yield, faster growth and disease resistance.
(b) Three aims of animal improvement
- To increase yield of animal products (meat, milk, eggs).
- To improve resistance to pests and diseases.
- To improve feed-conversion efficiency and adapt animals to the environment (also improve fertility and growth rate).
(c) Definition of terms
- (i) Parturition: The act or process of giving birth to young ones in animals.
- (ii) Gestation period: The length of time from conception (fertilization) to the birth of the young, during which the offspring develops in the womb.
(d) Three systems in the body of farm animals
- Digestive system.
- Respiratory system.
- Reproductive system (also circulatory, nervous or excretory system).
(e) Four advantages of castration in animal production
- It makes the animals docile and easy to handle.
- It improves the quality of meat (tender and free of objectionable odour).
